Concert Attire Guest Post at Animated Cardigan

What does one wear to an outdoor music festival? Well, my friend Erin and I compiled all our outfits from Summerfest (she went a lot more than I did) into a guest post over at Animated Cardigan, and I included some of our Dos and Don'ts. Check it out!

State Fair Food Planning

Deep-Fried Peanut Butter & Bacon Nuggets with Berry Weiss Jelly (source)

Less than one week to go until the Wisconsin State Fair 2013 kicks off! Since I've done one of these posts the last two years, I wanted to keep the tradition going. Here's what I'm hoping to consume this year:

New Food - Find the complete list here.
  • Beer-Battered Macaroni & Cheese Bites with Jack Cheese and Bacon - Sounds interesting. This might be a good alternative to the deep-fried macaroni. That stuff is hard to beat, though.
  • Deep-Fried Pepper Jack & Bacon Macaroni & Cheese on a Stick - Oh no, more delicious fried macaroni options! What to do, what to do.
  • Deep-Fried Peanut Butter & Bacon Nuggets with Berry Weiss Jelly - Peanut butter mixed with blended bacon, hand-rolled in Panko bread crumbs, deep fried and served hot and fresh with Berry Weiss Jelly. I hate to admit it, but I'm intrigued.

Food on a Stick - The complete list is here.
  • Deep-Fried PB & J - Why did I not get this the last two years? I keep talking about it...
  • Cookie Dough on a Stick - I always have this at the end of the night and can never finish it, but that's what friends are for. I mentioned in my 2012 retrospective that I might skip the cookie dough this year, so we'll see. It could happen.

Will Not Be Trying
  • Better with Bacon Bar - Ice cream rolled in bacon pieces and dipped in chocolate. I said this last year, and I'll say it again - what is the impulse to add bacon to everything? The peanut butter and bacon nuggets sound OK, but I'm not sure about the ice cream. Maybe the salty/sweet combo would be good??
  • Krispy Kreme Burger with Spicy Pig Candy - I don't even know what that means, but I'll probably just stick to the regular Krispy Kreme cheeseburger. Apparently spicy pig candy is candied bacon. Of course.
  • Cajun Frog Legs on a Stick - Ew?

Yearly Must Haves
  • Deep-Fried Oreos - Seriously, they taste like Oreo-flavored donuts.
  • Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger - It was surprisingly tasty last year (with ketchup), and I may just have it again.
  • Sweetcorn Jalapeno Nuggets - So good.

Summerfest and Fourth of July Weekend

This is going to be a long recap, so I'll start you off with an outfit picture of what I wore to work today.

Top: New York & Company; Skirt: Uniqlo; Shoes: Poetic License via shoo; Bracelet: Kate Spade

Well, my Summerfest adventures have ended for the year. The highlight had to be the day before the Package Tour show when my friends found and met all of 98 degrees, most of NKOTB, and Shawn from Boyz II Men. I was at home with Bridget, but I was able to pass on a tip I saw my ex-boyfriend post on Facebook, saying that the guys were bowling at Landmark. The girls hurried over there and got to meet and hang out with half of the Package Tour! They said all the 98 degrees guys were super nice, and that Joey from NKOTB was really funny.

The next night at the show, one of my friends saw a member of Boyz II Men's crew, whom she had befriended the night before. He ended up giving us upgraded tickets! From the lawn to section 2 we went. On top of that, we had purchased one 5th row seat to share among three of us, so we each got to experience part of the show close up, too. I even got some action - I touched Danny and Jon's hands as they ran by during "Tonight." Haha, it's the little things.

Saturday night, we saw John Mayer with Phillip Phillips as an opener. Earlier in the day, we did a lap around town to see if we could spot any buses. We noticed some at the Intercontinental; and as I parked, a small entourage of people hurried from the hotel onto the bus. One of them was a tall man in a white T-shirt and sunglasses - it was freakin' John Mayer! Although there were only a few fans around, and we had hopped out of the car just in time, he did not stop to take any pictures. And then we realized hours later that Katy Perry was probably walking right next to him, but we didn't even notice. D'OH!

The concert itself was just OK for me. I did think it was cute how Phillip Phillips was so nervous. And John Mayer left a couple of his huge hits off of the set list, so none of us were very familiar with most of the music. He did play two of my favorite songs from the one album of his I own, Continuum, so I was happy about that. His dedication to Katy Perry (not my video) during the show was very sweet, too.

As for the food, I definitely lived it up on Saturday with mini donuts (soooooooooooo good - a must have from now on), the Barrie burger from AJ Bombers (bacon cheeseburger with peanut butter - also really good), and cheese curds from Saz's (a classic).

Besides Summerfest and hanging out with friends on the 4th of July, my weekend also consisted of going to the water park in town with my mom and Bridget and working on the house more. The water park was great, and Bridget was loving life; but the house stuff...not so much. Sunday seemed to be crisis after crisis. First, our toilet kept running, which was the least of our problems; hubs fixed that with one quick trip to Home Depot. Then, our freezer stopped working, so I had to empty everything out, clean behind and underneath the fridge, and put just the popsicles back in, hoping they'd freeze. Hours later, they were still slushy, and we came to the conclusion that we'd either have to buy a new appliance or have someone come in and try to repair it. The basement project of the weekend was staining and polyurethane-ing doors, but the polyurethane that we had done earlier in the week had pooled up under the doors and dried weird, so hubs had to sand and redo them. Sigh. Then, I took over and stained some of the trim, so hopefully nothing happens to those pieces. Also, I was keeping laundry going, and I knocked a light bulb off the shelf in the process and broke that. The good news is, that forced me to clean the kitchen and laundry room. Poor Bridget was starved for attention with us dealing with this stuff, and was super hyper all day. With all that going on, yesterday felt like the longest day, and we were all glad when it came to an end. We did get our Maine trip booked finally, so there's that.

Some other related unfortunate news for me is that I won't be able to make Comic Con this year. Besides the fact that I would be dropping hundreds of dollars to meet a bunch of celebs, which we can't really afford right now, our Maine trip also conflicts with it. I'm a little bummed about missing out on the Weasley twins, but at least I got to meet Tom Felton last year. I would've been much more heartbroken had I missed that.

After all that, I'm pretty much exhausted, and coffee only helped a little today. Bridget's been waking us up at 6:00 or earlier (4:45 today), so that's been fun. Maybe it's time for a later bedtime for that one. Thankfully, our freezer seems to be working again, so hopefully that's the end of that.

This should be a pretty low-key week, and then next weekend, I have my last two Package Tour shows!

State Fair 2012 Food Retrospective

Next year, I need to be a little more strategic. My plan this year was to eat very little during the day, then eat a ton at night. While good in theory, this plan actually caused me to get full pretty fast, which meant I couldn't  fully enjoy my two favorites that I saved for the end of the night. So my plan for next year is to eat the deep-fried Oreos first, then maybe something dinnery, then the cookie dough on a stick. Or even maybe skip the cookie dough on a stick next year (gasp!).

Anyway, my friends T and E and I decided to start the night with dinner-type food. E got the Reuben roll from Slim McGinn's I think, which she tasted last year and loved. T tried ravioli on a stick from Miller Lite Sports Bar, and she said it was just OK, but it didn't hold a candle to the toasted ravioli at the Big Screen Bistro inside the Marcus Majestic movie theater. My first food of the night was the Krispy Kreme cheeseburger. Machine Shed also had a bacon cheeseburger option, but I figured this was crazy enough already.

T was kind enough to take pictures of my first reaction (stolen from Facebook).

We tried it without ketchup first, and it tasted weird and not great — just how you would expect. It tasted like a doughnut on top of a burger. The ketchup really saved it. The condiment served as a nice buffer between the doughnut bun and the burger patty, and the sweetness of the doughnut just made the ketchup taste a little sweeter, a little like barbecue sauce without the tang. I would actually not be opposed to eating it again that way except that I'm sure there will be something else I want to try more next year. Also while we were at Machine Shed, T tried the deep-fried PB&J on a stick, and she loved it. I'll definitely have to get that next year.

Our next stop was Rupena's, where I bought deep-friend stuffing (pictured below), and E bought deep-fried mac and cheese (not shown). The deep-fried mac and cheese was sooo good. I would definitely get that again. As for the deep-fried stuffing with its side of gravy, it tasted just like Thanksgiving. I thought if they found a way to put turkey in there, too, it might be even better. Otherwise, for me, trying it once was enough.

We took a little break from food and each got something to drink. I got a Blue Moon, which tasted weird to me for some reason. Apparently Blue Moon doesn't pair well with stuffing on a stick.

Although we were all pretty full already, I had a couple more things I had to cross of my list. We located the deep-fried cookie dough at Emma's Cookie Kitchen and shared a plate of that. It had a wonton-like shell with the warm, gooey cookie dough in the middle, then was topped with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar with ice cream on the side. It sounds heavenly, and it was good, but we concurred that we preferred our cookie dough more solid and on a stick, in this case.

My phone died after this, and I didn't think to have the girls take pictures, but our next food picks were my still current state fair favorite – deep-friend Oreos – from some random stand and deep-fried pizza on a stick for E from Brew City. She intended to eat the pizza earlier, but we couldn't find where it was. I loved the Oreos of course, and the bite of pizza I had was pretty good. It wasn't something I'd get myself since sausage is one of the only pizza toppings I don't really care for.

I debated for awhile whether I actually wanted to close the night with the cookie dough on a stick or skip it. After walking around for awhile and letting our food settle, I decided to go for it. I went with chocolate chip dipped in butterscotch without nuts or sprinkles. Even sharing it among the three of us, we still couldn't finish it.

So that's it for this year! I'm definitely over fried foods for awhile.

Hanson at Summerfest

Here's what I wore, and yes, our grass is very brown. We have not had rain in long time.

Dress and Sandals: Target; Top: American Eagle; Bracelets: Mexicali Blues and Pandora; Sunglasses: Express

Sunday night exceeded my expectations. Usually, because I’m a pretty optimistic person, and I’m spoiled when it comes to Hanson, I tend to build up unrealistic expectations. But this time, I thought realistically and was pleasantly surprised around every turn.
  1. I assumed we’d be at least five rows back since I knew some fans were going to be arriving at 9 AM. We actually ended up in the third row of bleachers and had a pretty great view.
  2. I assumed they would play all their singles and popular songs that most people would know and like. However, I didn’t expect some surprises like “And I Waited” and “Oh Darlin’” (turns out I’m a Zac fan now...).
  3. I assumed the crowd would be drunk, pushy, and annoying. Actually, the exact opposite happened, which shocked me most of all. I only saw one drunk annoying girl who was yelling at people for not standing up during the band who played before Hanson. Otherwise, everyone was pretty courteous. I guess we Hanson fans and Summerfest goers have matured!
Oh and we saw a celebrity (from afar)! Frankie Muniz is friends with Hanson, and he was at the show, hanging out at the side of the stage. It was kind of trippy to see him and his buddies jamming out to “MMMBop.” You can see his back in this picture I took of the backstage area. Frankie's the guy in the gray T-shirt. (Taylor's in the white T-shirt, and Zac is in the yellowish button-up shirt talking to Frankie.)

Besides the HOURS AND HOURS of waiting (I got there at 1ish, and the show wasn’t until 9:30), and even though we didn’t get pictures with the guys, I was pretty satisfied with the night. Since we wanted to save our spots, we didn’t do a whole lot of wandering around, but I did get out a couple times to grab food and scope out the backstage situation. The guys poked their heads out a couple times, but that was about it.

Partway through our long day of waiting

To kill the time, we also made lists of our favorite bands, and I finally made a list of all the Hanson concerts I’ve been to. We were all varying degrees of shocked and appalled by each other’s lists for Top 5 bands, but it was a hard list to make I thought. I’m not as crazy about anyone as I am for Hanson. Speaking of, this show was my 45th Hanson show.

I love this review of the show from jsonline:

Someone at Summerfest seriously underestimated the size of the Hanson fan base. The brotherly band largely, and incorrectly, classified as the one-hit wonder behind 1997 earworm "MMMBop," was designated to one of the Big Gig's smaller stages, the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Stage & Pavilion, for its Sunday headlining set.
Even with people standing on top of each other on benches and picnic tables, fans still spilled out into the main drag.

Yeah, we fans could've told you that they needed to be on a bigger stage. But I was just thankful that we were under a cover instead of being out in the sun all day. It's always nice when people realize that Hanson are so much more than just "MMMBop."

Here are some of my pictures from the show. You can check out the rest in my Facebook album.

Our Maine Travel Guide

Welcome to Maine. The way life should be.

As I've mentioned a lot lately, my Maine vacation is quickly approaching! We're on the road in T minus two weeks! So what does one do when in Maine? Here are the places we hit nearly every visit.

Freeport
Shopping!!!!!! The headquarters of L.L.Bean is here, and that store is ginormous. I still need to get a picture with the giant boot outside of the store someday. Besides that, there's an entire outlet mall that includes stores like Gap, J.Crew, Nine West, Coach, and then also some fun local boutiques as well.

Bartlett sign
Bartlett Maine Estate Winery
Bartlett specializes in fruity wine, like peach (a favorite of ours), pear, apple, and of course, blueberry. My husband has gone there every year for about 10 years, and the people know him by name now. Let's just say we're VERY good customers every time we go. We stock up for the year...seriously.

Winterport Winery
We don't do this one as often, but when we do, we always remember how much we like it. The port is delicious, and their cranberry wine tastes JUST LIKE cranberries.

Bar Harbor
Yes, it's touristy, but I still love stopping by and walking around the little shops. We sometimes grab ice cream or fudge and definitely hit Cool as a Moose to get some Life is Good apparel and Bark Harbor to pick up something for the dog.

Atop Cadillac Mountain
Acadia National Park
This is one of my husband's favorite spots. He's made me hike one of the mountains before, but I prefer it when we drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain and just walk around instead. At least I got a purse out of the hiking last year. Either way, you're going to get beautiful views. And if you're a first-time visitor, you should probably check out Thunder Hole, too, just to say you did.

Our meals at Jack Russell's
Jack Russell's Steakhouse & Brewery
The steaks are good, the meatballs are ridiculously good, the crab cakes are alright. They'd be better if they had a sauce to go with them, like hollandaise or something like that. The martinis are excellent. The spinach and artichoke dip is amazing (maybe I imagined this or it's a newer thing because I can't find it on any online menu). The shrimp skewers! How could I forget those? Try all three varieties, but I think we determined the cajun is the best.  We tend to drop a lot of money here...

Max plate at ABC (sorry, vegetarians)
Atlantic Brewing Company
Although I do drink beer occasionally, and I hear the beer is not to be missed, my favorite ABC beverage is by far the blueberry soda. My trip is not complete without it. If you love barbecue, GO HERE NOW! For a group of at least four (five or six realistically), I highly recommend the max plate. The sides of potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans are just as good as the meat. Or maybe better, if that's what you're into. To put it in perspective, I didn't eat beans at all until I tried these. Now I'm a bean fan.

Basically any little eatery on the side of the road
I'm kind of over the getting a whole lobster thing since I've done it once, but I still like to get a lobster roll if we stop for lunch when we're out and about. We've been to a handful of little diner-type restaurants in random places, and none of them seemed to disappoint.

Family and friends, did I forget any??

Life as of Late

The good news is, I haven't cared about shopping at all in the last week. Since my overindulgent shopping post, I haven't bought a thing and haven't even been tempted. My checking account thanks me. Somewhat related to that, I haven't put much thought into getting dressed or blogging either. I've basically been makeup-less and glasses-wearing (for some reason, I tend to only wear my glasses when I don't wear makeup) for the last two weeks at work. My mind has been consumed with tour and reliving old times.

Flashback to 2000...possibly early 2001

Loving life

Girl group Tribeca - honorary Becca (Theresa), Becca, and Bekah

It's actually funny that my husband and I are both reliving the early 2000s right now. He's playing Diablo and chugging Mountain Dew or screwdrivers (depending on the time of day) like he did in college, and I'm going to local band shows. I may or may not have made a husband-approved impromptu trip to Chicago last week...and it was awesome. I'm hoping to make it to two shows next week, too. And then I believe I'll be done with those for awhile. Back to present time then! I'm hoping hubs will get bored with his video game soon, too. One can hope. He's usually not a big gamer, but he every so often, he'll play something for weeks on end until he gets sick of it. I think last time it was Gears of War. That game was LOUD. I'm glad that phase is over.

Other than that, I'm super excited it's June because that means our Maine vacation is less than four weeks away! Woohoo!! I'm a fan of road trips, but they're a lot more complicated with a kid. I believe we've road tripped it to Maine with Bridget twice now, and she was really well behaved both times. But I know as she gets older, it's going to get harder and harder. Luckily, we only have to drive with her one way this time around. When hubs was growing up, he used to spend two weeks during the summer at his grandparents' house in Maine, so we're continuing that tradition with Bridget. I'm not sure if it'll be one week or two weeks, though. I'm going to miss her like crazy after a day, so I plan on being very busy for the duration of her absence. Hubs and I have already decided we're going to out to dinner every night and going to see movies and do other things out and about that are difficult with a toddler.

Maine Trip 2011 - Bridget with her crazy Great Uncle Danny

Maine Trip 2011 - She was so teeny and round-headed!

Maine Trip 2011 - She actually kind of hated the water last year. Hopefully with swimming lessons
under her belt, she'll like the lake more this year.

And then in July, I have two Hanson shows...although I haven't asked hubs if I could go to the second one yet. So hopefully two Hanson shows. Yup, I'm a crazy person.

To round out the summer, there's the annual camping trip with hubs' college buddies in the middle of August. That's always a good time – they're a really fun group. And for the first time, we have a cabin, so I'm even more excited about it. I've never been a big fan of camping unfortunately. Then, over Labor Day weekend, the Orlando trip with the girls! Lots to look forward to this summer.

My State Fair Food Lineup

Source

It’s almost time! The Wisconsin State Fair begins a week from today. I look forward to this event basically for one reason: deep fried Oreos. Can’t wait!

Every year, they add more new and sometimes crazy food to the fair’s lineup. A couple years ago, it was the much talked about chocolate covered bacon. This year, the hot new food is deep fried butter. I didn’t try the bacon, and I’m not planning on trying the butter, but there are still many other foods on my list already.

New Food on My Radar
  • Deep fried bacon wrapped hot dog on-a-stick - Sounds like a fried corndog with bacon.
  • Deep Fried Beer (Michelob AmberBock) with Cheddar Cheese dipping sauce - It’s deep fried beer! With cheese dipping sauce! I gotta try that.
  • Sweetcorn jalapeno nuggets - Corn, good. Jalapenos, good.
  • Sweet potato tater tots - I just really like sweet potatoes.
  • Elvis (Deep Fried Peanut Butter Cup in Banana Batter) - Mmmm.

Food on a Stick on My Radar - Find the complete list here. One year, I tried to eat only food on a stick.
  • Chocolate Dipped Frozen Bananas - I get one of these most years. I have no idea why I haven’t just made them at home instead.
  • Deep Fried Crab Cakes - I like crab cakes, so why not deep fry them?
  • Deep Fried PB & J - I have a feeling this will be my entree of choice. Or maybe my second course.
  • Meatballs - I just really like meatballs.

Will Not Be Trying
  • Deep fried butter - But I really hope I’m with someone who does try it because I do want to know what it’s like.
  • Bacon Sundae (vanilla ice cream, pancake syrup and real bacon bits) - I’ve witnessed guys eating ice cream on top of lasagna before, so I imagine this could be good to some people...but no.

Yearly Must Haves - No matter what else goes down, these will be consumed.
  • Deep fried Oreos - Seriously, they taste like Oreo flavored donuts.
  • Cookie dough on a stick - OK, it’s a big hunk of peanut butter, sugar, or chocolate chip cookie dough dipped in either chocolate or butterscotch. Oh...em...gee...

What are your favorite fair foods?

Also, having trouble deciding what to wear? Here’s my suggestion.
